McGuireWoods Consulting is pleased to welcome Spiro Amburn as senior vice president on the firm’s Georgia government relations team.
Concluding a distinguished 25-year career in state government, Amburn most recently served as chief of staff to House Speakers David Ralston, Jan Jones, and the incumbent, Jon Burns. His tenure with David Ralston remains noteworthy for its success and longevity.
In his role as chief, Amburn served as principal political and policy advisor and successfully managed several legislative initiatives. He was responsible for the daily operations of House administration, which included overseeing some 100 staffers and a $24 million operating budget. The noteworthy legislation that passed during his tenure include historic transportation and mental health bills that have reshaped Georgia.
Prior to his role in the Speaker’s office, Amburn served as director of legislative affairs for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. He was also the deputy director of legislative affairs for Gov. Sonny Perdue.
“As chief of staff to the House Speaker, Spiro has been at the center of Georgia’s government, helping to shape policy and run one of the most important offices in the state,” said Michael Shelnutt, senior vice president and director of the firm’s Georgia government affairs team. “He also has the benefit of serving in the executive branch, gaining the full perspective on Georgia’s governmental structure. This experience will be a great benefit to our clients.”
Former South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges, president of McGuireWoods Consulting: “After playing a key role in Georgia government for over a decade and being involved in high-level decision-making in the legislature, Spiro’s knowledge of Georgia’s political scene is unparalleled. We are happy to have him join McGuireWoods Consulting.”
McGuireWoods Consulting Chairman Mark Bowles: “Spiro, with his extensive experience in Georgia’s House and his role in helping craft state policy, is exactly the type of leaders that we are proud to welcome to the firm. McGuireWoods Consulting and our clients will undoubtedly gain from his in-depth knowledge.”
Amburn received his M.A. from the University of Georgia and his B.A. from Kennesaw State University. He also graduated from the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s Executive Management Program.
