J. Tucker Martin joined McGuireWoods Consulting in January 2018 as a senior vice president of MWCAdvocacy. He assists clients nationwide with defining and developing their brands, improving messaging, devising modern earned media strategies, and managing crises.
Prior to joining MWCAdvocacy, Tucker owned and operated his own communications shop. In that capacity he served as a senior advisor for campaigns for governor and the U.S. Senate and worked as a consultant to the Republican Governors Association. He has helped write and produce political advertising for numerous campaigns across the country, and also advised a number of major corporations, trade associations, and non-profits on communications strategy and tactics.
In the 2016 presidential cycle, Martin served as senior communications strategist for America Leads, the Super PAC backing Governor Chris Christie’s campaign.
Prior to opening his own communications consulting shop, Tucker spent eight years serving as communications director for former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. Martin ran McDonnell’s press office during his term as Attorney General (2006-2009); his successful 2009 campaign for governor; and throughout his entire term as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. (2010-2014)
During the 2005 Virginia gubernatorial campaign, Martin was Deputy Press Secretary for Republican gubernatorial nominee Jerry Kilgore. Before that campaign, he served as Kilgore’s Deputy Communications Director in the Office of the Attorney General. Prior to that stint, Martin oversaw communications for then Virginia House Majority Leader, and now U.S. Representative, H. Morgan Griffith (R-Va 9).
Tucker received his bachelor’s degree in history from Randolph-Macon College and his master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University. He and his wife, Emily, live in Richmond with their children, Connor and Katharine, and two dogs, Blue and Clifford.
