Special Session Called
Governor Pat McCrory has called the NC General Assembly into its fifth special session of 2016. The legislature will convene on Wednesday to repeal HB 2: Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, which was passed by the General Assembly in March. In a vote this morning, the Charlotte City Council elected to repeal the non-discrimination ordinance which pre-empted HB 2. The Charlotte City Council included a stipulation that the state must also repeal HB 2 in its entirety by the end of the year.
Changing Leadership
Today, House democrats elected Rep. Darren Jackson (D-Wake) as Minority Leader. The vote comes after current Minority Leader Rep. Larry Hall (D-Durham) announced last week that he would not seek reelection to the position, which he has held since 2015. Rep. Jackson is an attorney in Wake County and has served four terms in the legislature.
