NORTH CAROLINA HEALTH NEWS: Hurricane Dorian thrashes farmer’s tobacco crop
NC Health News interviewed Clemmons the day before Dorian started to make its presence felt at his farm, which this year was planted with 1,500 acres of tobacco and 200 acres of soybeans. He was hopeful then that the hurricane would turn out to sea and cause only minimal damage. This morning, Clemmons said the hurricane laid down his soybeans, but he expects them to recover. The tobacco, his cash crop, is another story.

AREA DEVELOPMENT: FFE Transportation Plans Service Hub in Rocky Mount, North Carolina
FFE Transportation Services, a temperature-controlled carrier, will create 96 new jobs in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The company will invest $4.7 million in establishing a new service center in Nash County.
WRAL TECH WIRE: Raleigh rises to 12th place on ‘best state capitals’ list but trails Austin – again
Raleigh ranks 12th among US state capitals, up from 13th in 2018, on the new “best state capitals to live in” from economic news and information site SmartAsset. But Raleigh still fell short of Austin, which tied for sixth place with Boise, Idaho.

The standoff between North Carolina’s state government power brokers over the state budget and Medicaid expansion has claimed a victim: the planned roll-out this fall of Medicaid managed care.N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Sec. Mandy Cohen announced Tuesday morning she was pushing back the Nov. 1 start date of Medicaid managed care, given the uncertainty caused by the lack of a state budget more than 60 days into the fiscal year that started on July 1.

THE NEWS & OBSERVER: After maps struck down in NC gerrymandering lawsuit, top Republican leader won’t appeal
North Carolina’s political maps for the state legislature are unconstitutional and must be redrawn before the 2020 elections, a court has decided. A panel of judges struck down the maps Tuesday, in a 357-page ruling that focused on the level of political partisanship used to draw them.

ISLAND FREE PRESS: Severe damage to N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke, but minimal impacts to Hwy. 12 on Hatteras Island; Buxton Power Circuits Activated
Per a Friday evening update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), engineers have been able to make some initial assessments on hurricane damage to N.C. Highway 12 on both Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands. There are two 500 foot sections of road that are severely damaged on Ocracoke Island which will take some serious repair work, per NCDOT.
TRYON DAILY BULLETIN: State suspends Highway 108 project
The state’s project to do improvements to Highway 108 between the Polk County Library and Walker Street in Columbus has been suspended. The Rural Planning Organization Transportation Advisory Committee met on Wednesday and were told the project will be delayed until 2024.
