June 12, 2026

On April 21, 2026, McGuireWoods Consulting senior advisor and former congressman G.K. Butterfield was presented with the distinction of a congressional portrait.

Butterfield boasts a five-decade career dedicated to public service in North Carolina and across the country.

Prior to joining McGuireWoods Consulting, Butterfield served the state of North Carolina’s first district for over 18 years, working on the Committee of Energy and Commerce. During his time in office, Butterfield spearheaded initiatives within pediatric health care, broadband internet and the recognition of North Carolina Native American tribes.

Additionally, Butterfield served as the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus for the 114th Congress. As chairman, Butterfield worked with former President Barack Obama and his administration on legislation to address poverty, income inequality and other economic justice issues.

The DC ceremony had over 20 members of congress present, notably House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies, as well as Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina and Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York.

At McGuireWoods Consulting, Butterfield bolsters the federal public affairs team clients with his expertise in the health care, energy and education sectors.

“The unveiling of my congressional portrait will be remembered as one of the most significant moments in my journey as an attorney, judge and congressman,” Butterfield said. “The unveiling was attended by family, former staff, McGuireWoods Consulting colleagues and dozens of friends. Also joining me on that memorable evening were dozens of my former congressional colleagues who continue to be dear friends. The portrait has been delivered to the Freeman Roundhouse Museum in my hometown of Wilson, North Carolina and will be dedicated in the coming weeks. I am humbled and grateful.”
