Several news outlets covered the recent news that Ryan Pierini joined McGuireWoods Consulting in Sacramento.
Global Legal Chronicle, American Lawyer’s Recorder and Law360 all noted that Pierini joined the firm after serving as UnitedHealth Group’s vice president of external affairs covering the California and Hawaii market. He was noted for playing an instrumental role in negotiating a multibillion-dollar Managed Care Organization tax that will support the largest Medi-Cal rate increase in California history for providers, ensuring greater access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for millions of Californians.
Pierini was quoted by Law360 discussing the advantages of working at MWC: “The opportunity to work for a very well-established law firm and consulting firm and being able to build and launch a Sacramento footprint was very attractive to me.”
He also noted that he was glad to be working with Breelyn Pete MWC senior vice president and director of the firm’s California government relations team. “To partner with [Breelyn] is exciting. We’re kind of the yin and the yang to a certain respect. She works in LA and handles local contracts in Southern California while I get to establish our footprint in Sacramento. It gives me the opportunity to build something unique for this firm.”
Pierini was also cited for his role as the lead lobbyist for Southern California Edison, one of the largest electric utilities in the country, where he played a key role in SCE’s reaction to the California wildfire crisis of 2017, helping to secure legislation needed to ensure SCE’s ongoing financial solvency.
Prior to his work in the private sector, Pierini served as legislative director for Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier); legislative aide for California State Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Heyward); legislative aide California State Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego); and field director for Rudy Salas for Assembly in 2014.
