We pay tribute to our friend and colleague Danielle Dellerson Hayes, whovaliantly fought a rare form of bile duct cancer for the past year beforepassing away June 22, 2017 at the age of 37.

Danielle joined McGuireWoods three years ago and immediately brightened thework environment as well as the attitudes of our tax policy clients. Shewas a model of comprehensive health for all of us—diet, exercise, embracingthe outdoors, and life balance.

In a short period of time, Danielle built a robust practice at McGuireWoodsConsulting (MWC). She was critical to bringing a coalition ofpublicly-traded timber REITs to the firm in 2014 to advocate for them inthe emerging tax reform debate. That work led to her securing therepresentation of the entire privately-owned timber industry (NationalAlliance of Forest Owners) for the past two years. An incredible advocate, strategist, and writer, Danielle became the face of MWC to the entiretimber industry and served them well. Danielle also served TIAA and a widerange of other clients during her three years at the firm.

While at McGuireWoods, Danielle married Jamie Hayes and embraced familylife, especially Jamie’s daughter Emma, whom she would occasionally bringto the office. The love Emma and Danielle had for each other was evident.During every Girl Scouts cookies season, Danielle would gently force us topurchase boxes of cookies from Emma.

As soon as her cancer was diagnosed last year, Danielle waged a battleagainst it not only for herself, but for others, raising hundreds ofthousands of dollars for cancer research. She recruited numerousMcGuireWoods colleagues and personal friends to bike for research dollars.Passionate in all she does, Danielle even took her battle to the local newsstation (see video here).

“I admired Danielle for her ability to develop a relationship with anyoneand the loyalty she demonstrated to her friends and clients,” saidWashington partner Russ Sullivan, who hired Danielle both at the SenateFinance Committee and at McGuireWoods.

When it became clear that her battle was almost complete, Danielle returnedto her native Montana to see family and friends and breathe the freshMontana air.

We at McGuireWoods celebrate the life and heart of Danielle DellersonHayes.
