Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, said Wednesday at the Legislative Building he would like to see a tax overhaul approved in 2013 that would reduce or eliminate income tax rates. He made comments on other topics in advance of Jan. 30, when the General Assembly begins its work in earnest.

Senate leader Phil Berger said Wednesday that he believes an overhaul of North Carolina’s tax system will happen this year and that he prefers a plan to make income tax rates as low as possible – maybe even zero.

State personal and corporate income taxes would be eliminated, sales taxes would be charged on services, and North Carolinians would pay state sales tax on groceries under a tax reform proposal with significant support in Raleigh.

Sen. Phil Berger, the top leader in the N.C. Senate, says any new law requiring voters to show identification at the polls should include a photo ID requirement.
