RICHMOND, Va. McGuireWoods Consulting announced today that Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources L. Preston Bryant, Jr., will join the firm in February as a Senior Vice President for Economic and Infrastructure Development.  Bryant will advise clients on a wide range of projects, including water and wastewater facilities, conventional and renewable energy generation, and commercial and industrial development.

“Preston Bryant has been a leader in Virginia in developing public-private partnership approaches and policies, and knows first-hand how they are implemented in the marketplace,” said Frank B. Atkinson, chairman of McGuireWoods Consulting. “He brings valuable new public and private sector experience to our economic development and infrastructure practice, and his strategic counsel will assist our clients not just in Virginia but nationwide.”

Bryant has served the public at the local, state, and federal levels. He was elected to Lynchburg City Council in 1994, served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1996 to 2006, and was a member of the budget-writing House Appropriations Committee and its Commerce and Technology Subcommittee. In 2006, he joined the cabinet of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine as Secretary of Natural Resources, where he oversaw six environmental, recreational, historic, and wildlife resources agencies, 2,200 employees, and a $420,000 million annual budget. He also helped develop Virginia’s first-ever statewide energy plan.

In 2009, President Obama appointed Bryant to chair the National Capital Planning Commission, the central planning agency for all federal lands and buildings in suburban Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia.

Bryant also was vice president and partner from 1996 to 2005 at Hurt & Proffitt, Inc., a Virginia-based civil engineering, surveying, and planning firm specializing in large-scale residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional developments as well as transportation facilities.

“I am honored to join McGuireWoods Consulting, a firm that is known nationally for its economic development and infrastructure practice,” said Bryant. “I look forward to being a part of this highly regarded team.”

Bryant received a B.A. in English from Randolph-Macon College, a master of humanities degree from the University of Richmond, and an M.A. in modern British literature from Royal Holloway College, University of London.
