As he assembles his new team to lead the Commonwealth for the next four years, Governor-elect Bob McDonnell has tapped Eric Finkbeiner for one of the top posts in the Governor’s Office and Cabinet.
Finkbeiner, a senior vice president of McGuireWoods Consulting and partner in the McGuireWoods law firm until his appointment earlier this month, was named Senior Advisor for Policy. In this Cabinet-level position, Finkbeiner will play a leading role in enacting the new Governor’s policy and legislative agenda.

Atkinson, chairman of McGuireWoods Consulting. “This appointment is a well-deserved honor for Eric, and he will be an outstanding advisor to Governor McDonnell and his team.”
Finkbeiner previously served in the administrations of former Virginia Governors George Allen and Douglas Wilder. He was policy advisor to Governor Allen on public safety and transportation issues and also served as his Executive Director for the Governor’s Commission on Parole Abolition and Sentencing Reform. In the Wilder administration, he served as the Director of Public Affairs for the Department of Criminal Justice Services, then as Communications Director for the Governor’s Task Force on Violent Crime.
He is also active in the community and serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Mentoring Partnership and was a Senate appointee to the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission. Finkbeiner also serves as Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 876, and has represented the Federation of Virginia Food Banks and the Tangier Island Health Foundation on a pro-bono basis.
He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. degree in Mass Communications (1990) and also earned a law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law (1999). He grew up in Bedford County and Forest before moving to Chesterfield County where he graduated from Clover Hill High School.
