WASHINGTON, DC – McGuireWoods Consulting LLC (MWC) announced today that Rob Hoppin, a leading political and corporate communicator based in the nation’s capital, has joined the firm as executive vice president and head of its strategic communications department. Hoppin’s focus will be to expand the firm’s national public relations capabilities and provide counsel and services to enable clients to meet their corporate and public affairs communications objectives.
“Rob has a wealth of public relations experience and has advised decision-makers at the highest levels of government and the private sector,” said Frank B. Atkinson, chairman of McGuireWoods Consulting. “He brings vital expertise to our core public-affairs offering and also will take the firm’s communications practice in new and exciting directions that will benefit our clients.”
Since September 2005, Hoppin worked at Edelman, the world’s largest independent public relations firm, where he was an executive vice president and global client relationship manager for the Wal-Mart account. He also managed a group of specialists that provided c-suite communications services to executives at some of the largest and most respected companies in the world.
“We are looking forward to having Rob here with us in Washington during a very dramatic time in our nation’s history,” said former Congressman L.F. Payne, Jr. (D-VA), president and chief executive officer of McGuireWoods Consulting. “He possesses a thorough knowledge of the workings of government and high-level corporate communications expertise, which is a rare combination that will enhance our ability to provide strategic counsel to our clients.”
Before joining Edelman, Hoppin worked for nearly four years as a speechwriter and communications advisor to Senate Majority Leader William H. Frist, M.D. He got his start in Virginia politics and government as a press aide to U.S. Senator John W. Warner on his 1996 re-election campaign and then as an assistant press secretary and speechwriter to Governor and Republican National Committee Chairman James S. Gilmore, III.
“This is an extraordinary time to practice public relations,” said Hoppin. “Critical communications challenges face our nation’s corporate and political leadership, and this comes at a time when technology is reshaping how people communicate and interact with each other, their customers, communities, companies and institutions. I look forward to helping clients make the most of this and many other opportunities and doing so with a team of professionals that I’ve known and respected for years.”
McGuireWoods LLP Chairman Richard Cullen, with whom Hoppin worked during Cullen’s tenure as Attorney General of Virginia, said, “I’m delighted to have Rob on board, leading the strategic communications department of our consulting group and also assisting our law firm in its strategic planning process. He’s going to be a real star for us — and most importantly for our clients.”
