McGuireWoods Consulting is pleased to announce that former North Carolina Governor Jim Martin will join the firm on June 16 as a Senior Advisor and will work with the firm’s clients from offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington and Washington, D.C.

Atkinson, Chairman of McGuireWoods Consulting, a subsidiary of the McGuireWoods LLP law firm. “Governor Martin has had a remarkable career serving the people of North Carolina and working with businesses and community leaders to grow the economy and expand opportunity in Charlotte and throughout the State. His advice to our clients and team members will be exceedingly valuable.”
Martin was the 66th governor of North Carolina from 1985 through 1993, and was a strong proponent of education, transportation, and commerce. At the time he was elected, he became only the second Republican to be elected as governor of North Carolina in the 20th century.
Before his tenure as governor, Martin served six terms as a member of U.S. Congress for the 9th District in North Carolina. He was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee for 10 years and chaired the House Republican Research Committee. During his time in Congress, he became the first elected official to receive the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award, which is given by the American Chemical Society for outstanding public service by an American chemist.

Most recently, Governor Martin was employed as a Corporate Vice President of Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte (1993-2008). In that capacity he was responsible for heading the System’s research and federal relations efforts.

Martin began his career as an educator, earning a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University and later teaching chemistry at his alma mater, Davidson College. During that time, he also served for three terms as a Mecklenburg County Commissioner.
